How to Safely Play Tag While Keeping Social Distance

Kids love to run and chase, that's a fact. We can't keep them cooped up in the house just to keep them safe from COVID-19. If we do, both the kids and the parents will go crazy!

There are several ways to play tag that gets kids moving and interacting while keeping social distance and avoiding contact. Here are our top recommendations for playing social distanced tag:

ZTAG

ZTAG is a non-contact game of tag that uses wearable sensors to detect who's tagged. When an "it" player gets within range (6ft) of another player, a tag is registered.

What You'll Need

  • Some flat space in a park or a large yard that's safe for running

  • At least 6 players

  • ZTAG system

How to Play

  1. Assign 2 players to be zombies and everyone else is a human

  2. Define the boundaries of the field so no one runs out-of-bounds

  3. Have the 2 zombie players start in one corner of the field and the remaining human players start in the opposite corner.

  4. On "Go!" the zombie players work together to chase down the human players. A human player is considered tagged when zombie players surround the human on both sides.

  5. A converted human is now a zombie and joins in to surround other human players

  6. The game ends when the last human is converted to a zombie.

  7. Once the round is finished, the last 2 humans to be converted will become the zombies for the next round.

Frisbee Keep-away

Frisbee tag is a fun game that's active and safe for a group of 4 players or more. The goal is for one team to throw a frisbee back and forth through the opponent team's zone without it getting swatted down or taken by the other team.

What You'll Need

  • Some flat space in a park or a large yard that's safe for running and throwing a frisbee

  • At least 4 players

  • A frisbee

How to Play

  1. Assign players to 2 teams evenly, team A and team B

  2. Select a boundary and have team A line up against both sides of the boundary

  3. Have team B start in the middle of the field

  4. Team A players will start with the frisbee and throw it from one player to another while team B players try to get the frisbee.

  5. If team B successfully takes the frisbee, the teams swap roles and team B plays Keep-away from team A.

  6. Scores can be assigned to each team by the number of successful throws without an interception from the other team.

  7. If a frisbee falls to the ground, the first team to touch the frisbee takes possession of it.

Archery Tag Dodgeball

What a fun way to combine archery with a game of tag! Players keep space and shoot each other with soft tip arrows.

What You'll Need

  • Some flat space in a park or a large yard that's safe for running and throwing a frisbee

  • At least 4 players

  • Archery Tag equipment for each player

  • Bunkers or natural barriers such as trees and other obstacles

How to Play

  1. Assign players to 2 teams evenly, team A and team B.

  2. Define boundaries of the field including a mid-field line.

  3. Place all arrows in the middle of the field across the mid-field line.

  4. Have players start at opposite ends of the boundary facing the mid-field line.

  5. On "Go!" all players rush the middle of the field to pick up the arrows and start shooting at their opponents.

  6. Anyone getting tagged by an arrow is now out.

  7. Arrows on the ground can be picked up and shot back to the other side.

  8. The game ends when the last opponent is eliminated with an arrow.
